About Stob Daimh [Stob Diamh]

Standing as the eastern anchor of the Ben Cruachan horseshoe, this Munro offers a rugged contrast to its famous neighbour. The approach involves fine ridge walking over Drochaid Ghlas, rewarding hikers with a sharp, stony summit and a dramatic perspective of the Cruachan reservoir tucked deep within the mountain's massive corrie.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'Stob Daimh', which translates as the Peak of the Stag, reflecting the mountain's history as prime stalking ground in the heart of the Lorn forest.
  • Most walkers reach the summit as the second peak of the classic Cruachan horseshoe, a high-level circuit that stays above 700 metres for the majority of its length as it circles the reservoir.
  • The summit provides an exceptional vantage point for looking directly down into the bowl of the Cruachan Reservoir, where the massive concrete dam is visible holding back the waters used for the 'Hollow Mountain' hydro-electric power station.
  • To the north and east, the view opens up toward the remote peaks of the Orchy hills and the Black Mount, with the distinctive pointed profile of Ben Starav visible across the head of Glen Etive.
  • At 999.2 metres, the mountain holds the slightly frustrating distinction of being one of the highest Munros to fail the 1,000-metre mark by less than the height of a standard walking pole.
  • Despite its status as a significant Munro, it is frequently regarded by tired hikers as the final hurdle on the long ridge back to the car rather than a destination in its own right.
